It may have surfaced

that awareness doesn’t always bring relief.

Noticing is an inroad.

But it doesn’t always yield clarity.

Nor does it promise to change how the body feels.

This is where regulation takes root.

Not as control

but as practice,

artform,

relationship.

Continuity that allows connection

with the beautiful,

the painful,

and the unfamiliar in between

to develop.

The body is constantly responding

to pressure, to expectation, to what has been carried for a long time.

Some feedback is immediate.

Some of it isn’t.

Patterns of bracing, holding, pushing through

often learned early,

often reinforced over time.

Tension, overwhelm, or a subtle sensation of feeling off, or disconnected, is information.

It doesn’t ask for peace.

Regulation isn’t about overriding the response.

It’s about creating a moment where the body can return to safety within.

Even briefly.

Not perfect calm

just a slight shift.

A breath that deepens on its own.

A shoulder that softens.

A sense that you are here, not just moving through.

This is why nature can be supportive.

Not because it fixes anything,

but because it doesn’t ask anything of you.

There is rhythm without urgency.

Shifts in seasons and space without demand.

Contact without control.

You don’t need to do much here.

You don’t need to regulate “well.”

You’re simply allowing a small interruption

in what has been automatic.

It starts with noticing.

But it is reshaped by returning.

A small effort to be with the stimulus.

And sometimes, that’s enough

to begin something different.

Choose one.

  • What does safety feel like in your body?

    *(this is sometimes accessible by first defining what lack of safety feels like)

  • Where are you overextending. Why?

  • What are you needing that you don’t have?

  • Where is resentment building?

  • What would honesty feel like without pressure?

  • Who or what helps you feel grounded?

  • What relationship needs more truth?

In nature:

Find a place in nature that has experienced rupture (a broken tree limb, a crack in dry dirt, a river around rocks).

Be with it. Be with yourself. Journal your reflections.
