what is ecotherapy?
ECOTHERAPY RECOGNIZES THAT YOU ARE NOT IN BUT OF THIS EARTH AND HAVE A UNIQUE PURPOSE FOR PERSONAL AND PLANETARY GROWTH. I HELP YOU RECLAIM YOUR BIRTHRIGHT TO HEAL AND CONFIDENTLY EMBODY YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO SERVE OTHERS.”— LAUREN PACIONE
What is Ecotherapy?
Ecotherapy has emerged as a promising field of psychological practice that integrates the healing power of nature into the therapeutic process. Ecotherapy is best thought of as the shell of an egg, serving as both the umbrella and foundation that merges well-researched studies of psychology, ecology, activism and spirituality. There are many modalities and specialties within the techniques of reconnecting humans, the soul, and the planet. Some include Animal Assisted Therapy, mindfulness and mind-body stress reduction in nature, art therapy with nature, horticultural therapy programs and ceremonial practices that may extend into plant medicines and community circles.
In my practice, I seek to empower the individual by serving as a guide and trusted council for you to connect to your true nature with Earth as a ‘therapist', healer, and muse. It is my personal teaching style and interest to synthesize the magical, wise and natural elements of Earth-based practices with well-researched data, neuropsychology and scientific evidence across multiple disciplines. The goal of my personal interpretation and methodology of Ecotherapy is to foster an environment for your body and the Earth-body to interact in a way that creates optimal integrated vitality for your physical, emotional-mental, and spiritual wellbeing as well as the planet.
Why would someone seek Ecotherapy?
The root of dis-ease caused by our modern lifestyles is disconnection; to True Self, to Spirit, to Community, to Great Nature. Many people are dealing with stress, anxiety, depression, and a sense of detachment from themselves and the natural world. Factors such as spending too much time indoors, being unlinked to the cycles of nature, and feeling a lack of purpose or meaning in life can exacerbate emotional and physical discomfort. Society promotes consumption, medication and substance use (alcohol, smoking, etc.) as a way to further numb uncomfortable feelings. This often leads to deeper disconnection, depression, worry, stress and causes unhealthy physical, relational and emotional patterns or results.
To say that someone ‘enjoys nature’ is like saying that someone enjoys breathing, and yet, it has become so common to be disjointed from the natural world that this distinction doesn’t seem unusual. We are not separate from nature, we’ve just forgotten such, and in the process have forgotten a piece of ourselves.
Ecotherapy and nature-based healing offer a way to reconnect with the natural world, find a sense of purpose, and alleviate the symptoms of stress and anxiety while creating safe and natural means to self-regulate and prevent self-harming responses to stress. Research shows that ecotherapy can reduce cortisol levels, boost immune function, and increase feelings of well-being and connection to the environment, one’s self and those around them.
Can I practice ecotherapy online?
Yes! (and no) The hallmark of any commitment to personal growth is the integration of information. Online courses and meetings are designed to encourage personal awareness and offer insight and custom exercises that you engage with in between sessions. Like all therapy or a workout in the gym, you must be a full participant and advocate in your personal advancement both in and out of the session.
A key element of Zoom is the community forum. Real community is lacking in the modern world and the internet makes it accessible around everyone’s varying schedules. Group meetings and classes are circles of future ancestors. While the priority is for you to be in a private and safe space when you log online, you are encouraged to do so with nature in mind. Whether outside in a park or a sunny place in your home, there are many positives to participating in Ecotherapy online.
